Effective: September 23, 2026Policy version: 1.2Canonical URL: https://runeandquill.app/privacy

Rune & Quill is developed and operated by Christopher Lawley ("Rune & Quill," "we," "us," or "our"). This policy explains how Rune & Quill handles information when you use the Rune & Quill apps for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, the Send to Rune & Quill integration for Drafts, and Rune & Quill's support pages.

Questions or privacy requests may be sent to christopher.lawley@theuntitled.site.

Summary

Rune & Quill does not use advertising, tracking, analytics, a developer-operated user account, or a developer-operated content server. Rune & Quill does not sell personal information. Your library is stored on your devices and, when iCloud is available for Rune & Quill, synchronized through the private database of your iCloud account.

Information handled by Rune & Quill

Depending on the features you use, Rune & Quill handles:

This information is app content chosen or created by you. Rune & Quill does not transmit it to Christopher Lawley or to advertising, analytics, or third-party generative-AI services.

On-device processing

Rune & Quill performs document rendering and OCR on your device using Apple system frameworks. When Document Intelligence is available, it uses Apple's on-device system language model. Rune & Quill does not send document content to a developer-operated or third-party AI server.

Audio recording requires microphone permission and begins only when you choose to record. You can pause or stop recording and revoke microphone access in system settings. Imported audio is copied into your library without changing the selected original file. Completed audio segments are saved locally so interrupted recordings can be recovered.

Optional speech transcription uses Apple’s on-device Speech framework and requires a supported device, language, and language files. You explicitly download missing language files from Apple. Rune & Quill does not upload audio to a developer-operated or third-party transcription server, and does not fall back to server transcription. Recording and playback remain available when transcription is unavailable. Language and transcription preferences remain on the current device. Provisional transcript text is temporary; completed transcripts and your corrections become library content.

Study-card generation uses the on-device model only on explicitly selected text. Generated drafts must include a matching source excerpt, and you review them before saving. Manual cards and authored Writing remain usable without Apple Intelligence. Cards retain their saved source excerpts even if the original source is later removed; editing a card does not change the source.

The Send to Rune & Quill Drafts action reads the active draft you deliberately send and related source metadata needed to import it, such as its title, permalink or identifier, linked-item metadata, and chosen folder. It prepares the same bounded local .runequill import document. You choose Rune & Quill in the system share sheet. The action does not modify the source draft, use the clipboard, make network requests, create an account, or send draft content to a Rune & Quill server. Rune & Quill copies and validates the temporary import document before storing the resulting PDF in the folder you selected, or in All Documents when no valid folder was selected.

Rune & Quill makes document titles available to system search. Full page text, handwriting, notes, overviews, Writing, study-card text, and transcripts are excluded by default. You can opt in under Settings > System Search and turn the option off at any time to remove that content from Rune & Quill's system-search index.

Remote images and links

When you ask Rune & Quill to convert Markdown that contains a public HTTPS image URL and do not supply a matching local image, Rune & Quill may download that image directly from the website that hosts it. The website operator and its network providers may receive ordinary request information, including your IP address, the requested URL path and query, the request time, and a Rune & Quill image-fetching user agent. Do not put sensitive information in remote image URLs. Rune & Quill uses the downloaded image for the document conversion and does not send the surrounding document text to the image host.

Other external document links are opened only when you choose to open them. The destination handles the request under its own terms and privacy policy.

iCloud synchronization

When iCloud is available for Rune & Quill, Rune & Quill uses Apple's CloudKit service and the private database associated with your iCloud account. Synced information can include document content, metadata, notes, summaries, markups, inserted-page assets, OCR derivatives, authored Writing, study cards and review history, reusable elements, saved audio, completed transcripts, corrections, stable source and timing references, revisions, and deletion records. Private library synchronization of saved recordings and transcripts is separate from local speech processing. Search indexes and provisional transcript text are not uploaded as sync records.

Private CloudKit records are accessible to apps authorized through your iCloud account. Christopher Lawley cannot browse or retrieve the contents of your private CloudKit records through CloudKit Console. Apple processes iCloud information under the terms and privacy choices associated with your Apple Account.

If you change iCloud accounts, Rune & Quill pauses synchronization and asks before copying the local library to the newly signed-in account.

Sharing and export

In addition to private iCloud synchronization, optional Apple language-file downloads, and the remote-image requests described above, Rune & Quill sends information outside the app when you direct it to do so, such as by exporting a document, audio, transcript, Writing, or library, using a system share sheet, or opening another app. The selected destination receives the information you choose to share and handles it under its own terms and privacy policy.

Library export archives are created locally. They can contain sensitive documents, notes, Writing, study cards, recordings, transcripts, and metadata and are not encrypted by Rune & Quill after you save or share them. Rune & Quill removes temporary export archives after completion or cancellation when possible. If an interruption leaves a temporary export behind, Rune & Quill removes it during a later maintenance pass after it is at least 24 hours old.

Privacy Lock controls access within Rune & Quill; it does not encrypt exported files or backups. Protected content requires the appropriate in-app authorization for access and export. Automatic backups exclude protected documents. Saved audio and workspace content follow their owning document’s protection and backup eligibility. Shortcuts operate on authorized saved recordings; they do not start microphone capture.

Deletion and retention

Permanently deleted document content cannot be recovered by Rune & Quill. You may also manage Rune & Quill's iCloud data through Apple's iCloud controls.

Support and website information

If you email for support, we receive the information you provide, such as your email address, message, and attachments. Do not send a document unless it is necessary for your support request. Support correspondence is retained for up to 24 months after the last substantive contact, unless a longer period is reasonably required for an active dispute, security incident, or legal obligation.

When you visit a Rune & Quill page on runeandquill.app, the website host and content-delivery providers may receive ordinary request information such as IP address, browser type, requested URL, and request time. Rune & Quill support pages must not use advertising or cross-service tracking. Information handled by those providers is subject to their service terms and retention practices.

Security

Rune & Quill uses Apple's app sandbox, platform data protection, private CloudKit databases, and encrypted network transport supplied by Apple. No system can guarantee absolute security. Protect your devices, Apple Account, exports, and backups with appropriate access controls.

Children

Rune & Quill is a general-purpose productivity app and is not directed to children under 13. Rune & Quill does not knowingly collect personal information from children through the app.

Your choices and rights

You can review and export your library in Rune & Quill, delete documents, control Recently Deleted retention, and manage iCloud through Apple system settings. Because Christopher Lawley does not possess your private Rune & Quill library, requests to access or delete app content generally must be completed on your device or through your Apple Account.

You may contact us to request access to or deletion of support correspondence that we control. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights to correct, restrict, object to, or obtain information about our handling of your personal information. We may need to verify a request before acting on it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy when Rune & Quill's behavior or legal obligations change. The updated policy will show a new effective date. If a change materially affects App Store privacy disclosures, those disclosures will be updated before the changed app is distributed.
